ANKARA - Ufuk University Faculty of Medicine faculty member Gülru Erdoğan made statements about the wire-screw apparatus she developed for the treatment of ingrown nails, which received an award in Switzerland.

Stating that patients who applied with the complaint of ingrown nails, they turned to such a study 10 years ago after the request for a solution without surgical operation, Erdoğan gave the following information:

“Our patients who are treated for ingrown nails avoid surgery. It also comes at a cost to the healthcare system. Practical applications such as nail wire have a great advantage in this respect. Since most of my patients wanted to insert and remove this wire without applying to any center, I turned to new searches. There are many different products on the market that are used for ingrown nails. However, these products need to be inserted and removed in a center with the help of a specialist. The apparatus I developed, which won an award in Switzerland, can be used without expert assistance in all kinds of ingrown nails, whether thick or thin.''

IT CAN BE ATTACHED EASILY WITH HOOKS
Noting that the wire, which is fastened with the help of hooks placed on the nail tips, can be easily bent from the outside, Erdoğan said, “The wire is passed by holding both ends of the nail, which is kept in water for about five minutes. Thick nails should be slightly raised. In severe cases, a separate screw is used,'' he said.

Stating that the basis of the treatment is to ensure that the nail, whose contact with the skin is cut, can breathe comfortably, Erdoğan said that if the treatment is successful, the edema regresses within a few days and the wire is removed in a week.

IT WILL BE ONE OF THE FREQUENT PROBLEMS
Stating that the wire, which the patients easily put on and take off, can be reused in case of recurrence of the wreck, Erdoğan said:

Ingrown toenails will be one of the most common problems we will encounter in the near future with the increase in obesity and diabetes. It is very risky to have a surgical operation in diabetics, AIDS patients and those whose immune system is suppressed. For this reason, we directly recommend the apparatus consisting of wire and screw for these people. There is also a great demand for children. Using this apparatus, the patient can easily wear shoes, go to work, school, and maintain his social life.

Expressing that their new goal is to prevent the recurrence of the disease, Erdoğan said, “With this apparatus, the recurrence rate has reached 17 percent in one year. Our goal is to bring the rate down even more,'' he said.

Stating that ingrown nails, which is seen in the society at 5-15 percent, is a very common ailment, Erdogan said, “Now the period of carving nails in pedicure salons should end. This apparatus can be used in all kinds of nail ingrown, even in severe cases,'' he said.

Erdogan, who also warned those with ingrown nails, "Patients should not cut the edges of their nails in such a situation, they should not put anything under or on top of them. Otherwise, surgical operation becomes inevitable because the wire cannot be inserted.
